How to Fix the Generic User Error (135000) in WhatsApp Cloud API

Recently, we’ve encountered the frustrating “generic user error” (Error code: 135000) in the WhatsApp Cloud API, affecting several users. Many reported that their dynamic templates, which previously worked fine, suddenly stopped functioning.

Investigating the Issue

After verifying all API calls related to the templates, we found no mistakes on our end. Yet, the error persisted. Searching through the Meta Developer Forum, we discovered that while no official solution exists, a common workaround has helped many: deleting all templates and recreating them. (Source)

We tested this solution for multiple clients. Deleting and recreating the templates temporarily resolved the issue. To further ensure stability, we also removed and re-added the associated phone number, which ultimately fixed the problem for several users.

Step-by-Step Fix

Method 1: Delete & Recreate Your Templates

  1. Access Your WhatsApp Business Account: Log in at Meta for Developers.
  2. Backup Your Templates: Navigate to the Message Templates section, copy all text and details, and take screenshots if needed.
  3. Delete Existing Templates: Select all templates and delete them.
  4. Create New Templates: Go back to the Message Templates section and click “Create New Template.”
  5. Submit for Review: Once completed, submit the template and wait for approval. You can track its status in the Message Templates section.

If the error persists, proceed to Method 2.

Method 2: Delete & Re-add Your WhatsApp Phone Number

  1. Go to the “Phone Numbers” Section in your WhatsApp Business account.
  2. Remove the Linked Phone Number: Select the phone number and click “Delete.”
  3. Re-add the Same Number: Click “Add Phone Number” and follow the setup steps.
  4. Verify Your Number: Complete the OTP or verification process provided by WhatsApp.
  5. Test Your Templates: Once done, check if the issue is resolved.

Final Thoughts

While this method is not a permanent fix, it has worked for many users. If you’re still facing issues, stay updated with Meta’s forums or reach out to WhatsApp Business API support.
